Menorca

Declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1993, the island of Menorca is an invaluable natural location. By booking a stay in our hotels in Menorca, you will be able to enjoy incomparable landscapes, as well as the Balearic Islands charming life.

What to visit?

Menorca's first inhabitants settled in the island during the Bronze Age. This is the reason why the island is crammed full of megalithic monuments and caves, such as Trepucó, Talatí or Tudons sites. The island's palaeo-Christian past can be seen in the Basílica de Son Bou and the ruins of a fortress close to Santa Águeda.

The Ciudadela, the island's historic district, was built in the 12th century and keeps many of the original buildings since then. Inside its walls, we can visit the Catedral-Basílica de Santa María de Ciudadela, built in the 14th century. The Castillo de San Nicolás, 18th century, is close to it, as well as the Plaza del Borne, where an obelisk commemorates the Ciudadela's defense against a Turkish attack in the 16th century. The Ciudadela leads into the harbour, a perfect place to have lunch or dinner.

Mahón, the island's capital, is also Menorca's most important city. Its natural harbour is among the world's most beautiful ones. Next to it, you will see the Fortaleza de la Mola and the Bastión de San Roc. Nearby, inside what used to be a convent, the Museo de Menorca can be visited, something you should definitely do.

Moreover, in the island you can visit Monte Toro, Menorca's highest point; the Fuerte de Marlborough, built by English people during the 18th century, as they were fighting to control the Mediterranean sea; Binibeca, an extremely beautiful fishing village; S'Albufera des Grau, the island's biggest natural park; and the Faro de Favaritx, a lighthouse on an almost lunar location.

What to eat?

We recommend trying Mahón-Menorca cheese and the sobrasada (a kind of sausage). As a main dish you should have a 'caldereta de langosta' (lobster stew), and as a dessert, 'ensaimada' (spiral-shaped pastry) or 'patissets' (pumpkin pastry). Our hotels in Menorca offer a wide menu with suggestions and local products you can enjoy.
